Bowline
The bowline is a good knot to create a secure loop.

Step 1 |
Form a bight of the desired size. |

Step 2 |
Make a small loop. Note how the loop is formed on top of the rope in the picture. |

Step 3 |
Pass the rope through the small loop. |
|
Step 4 |
Pass the end of rope under the standing part as shown. |
|
Step 5 |
Pass the end of the rope through the small loop. |
|
Step 6 |
Pull the rope tight. |
